Wrestling Classes

Our Wrestling classes combine techniques from Freestyle, Scottish Backhold, Catch Wrestling and Judo to provide a class that is well suited to anyone who wants to learn how to control and position an opponent from a standing position. If you want to get started with one of the sports listed above or if you already have a background in Martial Arts/Combat Sports and just want to add something extra to your skillset, this class is perfect for you. All of Hipe’s classes are beginner friendly, we pride ourselves on being able to offer a class that is well suited to complete beginners whilst also offering a challenging session for seasoned competitors – don’t believe us? Come and find out.

We currently offer 2x dedicated Wrestling classes per week at the following times:

Tuesday: 1830 – 20:00

Friday: 17:00 – 18:30

We would greatly appreciate your getting in touch prior to attending your first class so that we can plan the content of the class accordingly and answer any questions you might have – but if you would prefer to turn up first that is absolutely fine, no need to book a place or to sign up for a membership to our host facility (The Pleasance).

You don’t require any specific clothing or equipment to take part in a class, many choose to buy Wrestling Boots/Shoes but they are not required. We recommend bringing a bottle of water and wearing clothing you are happy to exercise in (preferably without zips, but if that’s impossible we can make it work!).

Open Mat

Our Open Mat session is as it sounds – an entirely open session that is unstructured and casual where you can come along to: practise what you’ve learned in classes, spar with other members, ask your coach questions about specific techniques, drink coffee, catch up with friends, try out cool moves you’ve seen on social media.

This session is entirely suitable for anyone of any ability level – however, if you have your heart set on training something specific we recommend bringing a friend that you know is happy to practise those techniques with you, just in case no one else at the open mat wants to do that on the day.

Sunday morning open mats are what you make them, if you turn up with a coffee and socialise the whole time – that’s great. If you attend and spar for the full 2hrs – that’s great too.

Grappling Classes

Our Submission Grappling classes are largely influenced by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Catch Wrestling. In these classes we focus on how to control and position an opponent on the ground, how to incapacitate them with joint locks/chokes and how to escape compromising positions or situations whilst on the ground. If you’d like to make a start with the worlds fastest growing hobby/sport (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) then this is the class for you. Or, if you’d like to work on your self defence skills for the real world then we suggest this class as your starting point as Submission Grappling is a very beginner-friendly starting point for those who’d like to learn to defend themselves against an attacker.

We currently offer 2x dedicated Submission Grappling classes per week at the following times:
